Have you ever walked into a bathroom with trash on Have you ever walked into a bathroom with trash on the floor, toilet paper not stocked, or harmful messages graffitied on the stalls? How did it make you feel? Last year, the OMM club at Eastern High School in Washington, DC, saw cleaner, more positive bathrooms as a way to improve their peers’ mental health. With a $500 Changemaker Award, they made their “Better Bathrooms, Better Health” project happen. By enhancing the physical space of their school’s 16 bathrooms with cleanliness, positive messages, and mental health resources, the Eastern High OMM club fostered an environment of care for all students. Their creativity is a beautiful example of how teens are the best leaders in improving their mental health and preventing suicide. That’s why we launched the Changemaker Award last year, offering $500 grants to ten teen-led OMM clubs. The program was a huge success, so we are fundraising to continue it in 2024. We’ve set a goal to raise $6,000 in September and only have a week left. You can fundraise or donate to the 2024 Changemaker Awards fund at:

When asked how the OMM program impacted your menta When asked how the OMM program impacted your mental health, a club member from Courtland High School responded, “It saved my life.” On the first day of #suicidepreventionmonth we want to thank the teens leading their clubs, the club sponsors who guide them along the way, and our funders, partners, and supporters who make Our Minds Matter, a life-saving program possible. Thank you for helping us work toward the day when no teen dies by suicide. OMM is an upstream prevention program that helps build protective factors to prevent suicide and promote well-being. Our approach is one piece of the puzzle to address the youth mental health crisis. It will take all of us to build a world where no teen dies by suicide. So on this day, we are especially grateful for all the other mental health advocates and organizations doing prevention work, responding and supporting those in crisis, especially those supporting people and communities affected by suicide. ❤️‍🩹 Today we find joy in knowing we’ve saved lives, remember those we have lost, and move forward together with a commitment to change the culture around mental health.
