The transition from winter to spring brings hope and new beginnings. It is also an opportunity for students to gain new motivation for the remainder of the school year. In late February, seventh-grade students from Ida B. Wells Minds Matter (IMM) at Ida B. Wells Middle School in Washington, D.C., hosted a Because You Matter campaign during their lunch periods. The club members invited students to write words of encouragement and displayed them around their campaign slogan, “Talk it Out, Reach Out, It’s Ok Not To Be Ok.”🧡

“We want to remind students that they matter, they belong here, that they’re important to us,” said Erin Weiss, a school mental health professional supporting Ida B. Wells students.

Practicing self-love is good for your mental health and is important because you matter!🫂 As members of the Teen Advisory Council at OMM, we definitely understand how difficult it can be to find time for yourself when it feels like you have hundreds of other responsibilities. But, remember that small acts of self-love are just as important as any other!💙

Investing in healthy habits to help combat stress

Investing in healthy habits to help combat stress is a great way to start the new year. This past January, Patriot Minds Matter (PMM) at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland, collaborated with a student-led Asian Mental Health Awareness project to host a bracelet-making activity. Students gathered to make friendship and rainbow loom bracelets, practicing creativity as a healthy coping mechanism.🫂

PMM student leaders said they encourage their peers to prioritize mental well-being just as much as their academic success. The club looks forward to working with other student groups and creating spaces for students to destress and connect with others. Best wishes to Wootton students in this new year!🎉

As we prepare for the new year, OMM clubs are holding their last meetings and events of the year.🥳 On December 11, McKinley Minds Matter (@techmindsmatter) at McKinley Technology High School in Washington D.C., collaborated with their school’s Poetry Club to host their first Poetry Slam open mic of the school year. Students gathered to enjoy hot chocolate and poetry from their peers.🎤Students’ work acted as an outlet to share their struggles and to remind their peers that their mental health matters! Congratulations to all of McKinley’s student poets — Looking forward to what MX3 has planned for spring!💐

As schools wind down for winter break, students are met with the stress of exam and project deadlines. In late November, CHEC Minds Matter (weare_cmm) at Columbia Heights Education Campus in Washington D.C., organized a pre-Thanksgiving spirit week. Students participated in fun relaxing activities including a s’mores-themed gratitude coloring sheet, self-care bingo, and journal decorating.✏️ The events even garnered participation from some CHEC staff.💙 Cheers to CHEC Minds Matter for keeping their school spirit warm as we get closer to winter!❄️
