During the season of tricks and treats, Edison minds matter (EMM) of Edison High School in Alexandria, Virginia reminded their peers that treating yourself and others well is key to creating an environment that’s good for community mental health during their Fall Wellness Week, 10/25/22-10/28/22.
Throughout EMM’s Fall Wellness Week, there were four different activities that students could get involved with. On Tuesday, folks were encouraged to share positive messages with one another by posting a note on a community bulletin board. The result was a collage of colorful papers with messages such as “You are worthy” and “I’m proud of you” for all to see. On Wednesday, students were encouraged to work as a team with their class during their advisory period to decorate their door signifying what wellness means to them.
On Thursday, during lunch periods, students stopped by their Student Services spot to take pictures with their peers to celebrate what supports their wellness. While some students mentioned things like Music and Taylor Swift, others named the friends standing next to them. On Friday before school, students engaged in a brief yoga activity to end the week on a relaxing note.
During these activities, EMM presented opportunities for their peers to improve their mental health by building connectedness with one another, reflecting on what makes them feel their best, and taking space to intentionally de-stress.
