Our Minds Matter is committed to uplifting communities that experience oppression and marginalization, and part of that commitment is amplifying culturally competent mental health resources. The Latin American and Hispanic community is not a monolith – instead, it is full of dozens of unique and beautiful cultures, each with their own histories and stories.
About 18% of the U.S. population is estimated to be Hispanic or Latine and of those, over 16% reported having a mental illness in the past year. That’s over ten million people – and does not account for all those that go unreported. Latin American and Hispanic youth experience a unique set of barriers and stigma relating to mental health and therefore, it is important that mental health resources created specifically with them in mind are readily available.
