Engaging with student athletes

A few weeks ago, Gahanna Minds Matter from Gahanna, Ohio, met up with their school’s fall sports teams. Club leaders attended various team practices to talk about their club’s work. In the image below, Gahanna student leaders are speaking with the Lincoln High School freshman, junior varsity, and varsity football teams to discuss why mental health is so important, especially for male athletes.

These student leaders shared that balancing a sport, academics, and a social life can take a toll on one’s mental health. Gahanna Minds Matter, like all Minds Matter clubs, are there to provide a safe space, support, and coping skills to navigate through the pressures of the day to day life of being a teen.

When we take care of each other and normalize these conversations around mental health, we all win. To learn more about how your club can participate in similar initiatives with student athletes, check out Athletes’ Minds Matter. This resource was specifically created for OMM clubs to engage student athletes, especially male athletes, in conversations about mental health.
